Earth Day 2026: Putting Purpose into Action for a More Resourceful world

April 22, 2026

Each year on April 22, Earth Day invites us to reflect on our shared responsibility to protect the place we all call home—and to turn that reflection into action. This year’s theme, Our Power, Our Planet, is a reminder that real progress happens when people, communities and technology work together to build a more vibrant, sustainable future.

On Earth Day, and every day, our purpose to create a more resourceful world guides everything we do. We’re proud to work alongside utilities and cities to help them better manage energy and water, so the communities they serve can live and thrive. Here are a few examples of this purpose in action across the globe.

Reducing Wildfire Risk and Outages in California
In wildfire-prone regions like California, utilities are under growing pressure from customers and regulators to identify risk earlier and respond more proactively. To help meet this challenge, Itron and Toumetis are working with California utility San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) to strengthen wildfire mitigation, reduce outages and shorten restoration times when outages do occur.

The project brings together data from smart meters, substations, relay signals and other field-level grid sources into a single operational view. When combined with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), this data helps SDG&E surface emerging risk sooner, prioritize events and accelerate response. Together, Itron and Toumetis are supporting SDG&E’s efforts to protect communities and critical infrastructure while strengthening long-term resilience.

Advancing Virtual Power Plants in Australia
Australia has one of the highest levels of customer-owned distributed energy resources (DERs) in the world, and utilities are exploring new ways to manage them while keeping the grid reliable. To support this shift, Synergy, the country’s largest electricity generator, is using Itron’s Low Voltage Distributed Energy Resource Management System (LV DERMS) to orchestrate and optimize DERs across Western Australia.

The solution enables Synergy to monitor and control customer-owned resources such as rooftop solar and batteries, giving customers the choice to participate in a virtual power plant (VPP) and unlock greater value from their energy assets. As VPPs play a growing role in balancing supply and demand, this approach enhances grid flexibility and represents a significant milestone in Australia’s clean energy transition. Similarly, Itron is helping Ausgrid manage CERs in Eastern Australia.

Introducing Smart Water Metering in Fiji
Efficient and reliable water service requires modern, intelligent operations. In Fiji, Itron, Pacific Technologies and the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) came together to make this a reality with the launch of the country’s first-ever smart water metering deployment

By upgrading its existing meters with Itron’s Cyble® communication modules, WAF transformed them into smart meters capable of supporting digital infrastructure and data-driven operations. The project creates a foundation for continued modernization, advancing WAF’s long-term vision for a resilient and reliable water network that can grow and adapt as community needs, priorities and budgets evolve.

Bringing Intelligence to the Grid Edge in Greece
Across Europe, utilities are modernizing grid operations to improve customer experience while preparing for a more decentralized energy future. In Greece, Hellenic Electricity Distribution Network Operator S.A. (HEDNO) is taking a major step forward by deploying Itron’s Enterprise Edition (IEE) Meter Data Management (MDM) system to manage 7.7 million meters, along with Itron’s Utility IQ headend system to support nearly 1 million meters.

These systems went live in less than a year. Together, they lay the groundwork for grid edge intelligence, helping HEDNO modernize its electric grid, integrate more DERs and support Greece’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The result is more agile and precise grid operations and improved service quality for millions of customers.

Shaping a More Resourceful World
Protecting the place we all call home is a responsibility that extends well beyond Earth Day. Grounded in our mission to create a more resourceful world, we look forward to continuing our work alongside utilities and cities to meet today’s challenges while building a more resilient, sustainable future—on Earth Day and every day.
