Making a Difference with Smart Decisions and Demand Response

July 2, 2024

Summer has arrived and it’s starting to heat up where I live. Recently, the weather was projected to reach 103 degrees! So, what did I do? I proactively bought 23 Smart Thermostats.

...But not for my home.

Earlier this year, I thought, why don't I reach out to my daughter's school and inquire about their energy usage? I’ve gained incredible experience in the energy sector through my job at Itron, especially when it pertains to demand response and energy efficiency. This seemed like the perfect opportunity! My daughter's school principal was more than eager to meet with me and see how I could help.

After some review and help from Southern California Edison, I recommended the school switch to a different time of use (TOU) rate plan, which will save them save over $5,400 in the first year! What a great start for a school that will appreciate every penny saved!

With the installation of smart thermostats, the school is ready to handle whatever the summer has in store:

  • Staff are trained on smart thermostat usage and management;
  • Staff have the thermostat app downloaded and are ready to be proactive with energy conservation;
  • They are enrolling in demand response for additional savings;
  • The parish on the same grounds will install the remaining smart thermostats.

I will post the results on how the school/parish performed compared to last year once the summer ends. Stay tuned! The next immediate need is installing new HVAC units. I will need to do further research on how to help them with this. Please reach out if you have any suggestions!

Stay cool this 4th of July! And for all of you reading this, remember that you too have incredible experience and can make impactful changes in your immediate circle. Use your talents and love your community in whatever way you can. It matters!

P.S., Mrs. Malouf, School Principal of 37 years, retired this year. She is a true inspiration and despite being in a wheelchair, she did not let it limit her countless contributions to the school. She is an amazing educator and will be missed!
