Itron History
A legacy of innovation
-
1977
Schlumberger forms the following group of subsidiaries: Flonic (water, heat, gas); Enertec (electricity); and Sereg (industrial control and valves). In 1987, these companies are restructured under Schlumberger Industries into specific market segments: electricity, gas, water, heat and regulation.

Itron is founded by a small group of innovative engineers intent on finding more efficient ways to read meters in Hauser Lake, Idaho.

1978
The A6—the industry's first polyphase, single-disk meter—is launched.

1979
The hybrid electromechanical J5S residential meter, a staple of the electricity metering industry, is released to market.

1980
The paperwork is taken out of meter reading operations with Itron's first-generation of portable handheld computers and application software.

1984
Expansion begins into the Asian market. The following year a new manufacturing plant starts operations in Indonesia, PT Mecoindo.

1986
Two new lines of water meters are introduced: Flostar, a single-jet, class C residential meter; and Woltex, a class B, Woltmann-type meter with horizontal helix.

Two companies are acquired in Europe: Allmess Congermania in Germany and Conteuro Rigas in Italy.

The Gallus meter is made simpler and lighter through automation and miniaturization and rebranded the Gallus 2000. With its launch, Schlumberger becomes the world leader in domestic gas meters.

A secure, smart key prepayment meter, the KBA, is released to market.

A new series of Delta rotary meters are launched, including the DN40 and DN100.

Two additional companies are acquired in Europe: Thorn Emi Gas Metering in the U.K. and Bosco Spa in Italy.

1990
Large-scale residential automatic meter reading (AMR) technology is introduced by Itron. This enables utilities to collect natural gas and electricity data remotely via wireless communication.

Electronic residential meters are mass-produced in France and the U.K. (including the A14, A15, SPA, SPB).

Leveraging advancements in electronics, Schlumberger launches the solid-state VECTRON; meter to serve the commercial and industrial market.

A new intelligent gas meter, Dialogas, is introduced.

Two German companies are acquired: Heliowatt and Danyl.

The RF1, 2dm3 residential diaphragm meter is redesigned, and begins production on an automated assembly line.

Water utilities and municipalities worldwide benefit as Itron extends AMR technology to water providers.

The French "Fluxi NM" and German "TZ" merge to become the "Fluxi2000/TZ".

AEG Meters is acquired with production sites in Italy, Germany, Spain, and South Africa.

The Cyble communication protocol is introduced and is installed in all water meters.

Itron acquires UTS, bringing MV-90, an industry-leading metering software application to Itron's software portfolio, to collect, analyze and apply advanced meter data from commercial and industrial energy users.

Flodis, the first, single jet, class C, communicating meter fitted with an extra-dry register is released.

The world's first dual-energy (electricity and gas) prepayment system, Talexus Vendor, is launched. Payment is collected via smart card.

Schlumberger changes the face of electricity metering with the launch of CENTRON;, the first solid-state meter designed for mass deployment in the residential market

Schlumberger introduces the QUANTUM; Q1000 multi-measurement meter for generation and transmission applications.

The Gallus meter is fitted with radio-frequency communication modules.

Schlumberger releases the highly-successful SENTINEL; meter for commercial and industrial metering applications.

Schlumberger ceases its metering activities through an LBO (leveraged buyout). The Actaris group is established.

Featuring a wide measurement range and precise accuracy, the Delta rotary gas meter is launched.

Itron is the first in the industry to achieve a significant milestone by shipping its 1 millionth ultrasonic gas smart meter. The Intelis smart gas meter extends intelligence to the edge of the network, evolving the gas distribution network from a one-way gas delivery mechanism to an interactive energy network that can deliver gas more safely and efficiently.

Itron extends the capabilities and reach of its distributed intelligence (DI) platform in several ways. First, two new products are introduced that enable DI to be included in third-party devices (via the DI NIC) and with additional communications options (via the Itron Edge Gateway). Second, a milestone is reached when Itron ships its 6 millionth DI-capable electricity smart meter.
